There is something about roses at the end of the day, when the heat has gone out of the garden and their fragrance seems to hang a little closer to the ground. Rose was created around that idea — not the heavily perfumed rose of powder rooms and old-fashioned soaps, but something fresher, warmer and closer to the flower itself.
It opens with bergamot and blood orange, giving the fragrance a bright citrus lift before the florals begin to emerge. Rosewood sits underneath, warm and slightly woody, while jasmine adds softness through the middle. Then the rose arrives properly — petals rather than perfume — with gardenia beside it, creamy and full without becoming overly sweet. The citrus keeps everything fresh; the rosewood gives the flowers depth. What remains in the room is unmistakably floral, but warm, balanced and surprisingly easy to live with.
Where it works
Joanne, who has spent eighteen years designing interiors, would put Rose somewhere it can catch natural light. On a coffee table beside a window, the red-pink glass becomes part of the room during the day; lit in the evening, it takes on an entirely different character.
It works particularly well in bedrooms and living rooms, where the floral notes have enough space to soften as they move through the room. On a bedside table, the rose and gardenia become more intimate, while the rosewood gives the fragrance enough depth that it doesn't feel overly sweet or delicate.
Rose also makes sense in an entrance or hallway — somewhere you notice the fragrance as you move through the house. In smaller rooms, give it time before deciding it needs more fragrance; jasmine, rose and gardenia can build surprisingly quickly once the candle has been burning for a while.
The vessel
Rose comes in a rich red-pink glass vessel chosen to complement the fragrance inside it. The colour gives the candle presence even when it isn't lit — warm enough to sit comfortably alongside timber and natural materials, but with enough colour to work as an accent against a more neutral interior.
Once lit, the flame changes the character of the glass, bringing warmth and depth to the red and pink tones and casting a softer glow around the candle. It is the kind of vessel that works as part of an interior rather than simply as a container for fragrance.
The candle stands approximately 10.5 cm tall and 9.5 cm across. When the wax is finished, clean out the remaining wax and keep the glass — as a small vase, a bathroom vessel, a holder for brushes or simply as a decorative object in its own right.
With approximately sixty hours of burn time, Rose is made for regular use. Light it in the late afternoon and let the fragrance develop gradually into the evening. The citrus appears first; the flowers take a little longer.

Caring for your candle
- The first burn matters most. Let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the glass before you put it out — usually two to four hours. A candle remembers its first burn. Stop it early and it will tunnel, and keep tunnelling for the rest of its life.
- Trim the wick to 5 mm before every burn. An untrimmed wick smokes, flickers and marks the glass. A trimmed one burns clean.
- Burn for no more than four hours at a time. Beyond that the wax overheats and the fragrance flattens.
- Keep it out of a draught. Moving air makes the flame lean, and a leaning flame is what causes uneven burning and soot on the glass.
- Stop when about 10 mm of wax remains. Below that the vessel gets too hot to be safe.
- Then keep the vessel. Wash it out with warm soapy water and give it another purpose. The glass was designed to remain part of the home long after the fragrance has gone.

I recently purchased the XL Joanne Johnson Design Vanilla Woods scented candle. The scent of vanilla and sandalwood together is divine! The hand blown vintage tumbler is beautiful and something I can keep after the candle is finished. I made the purchase at the Paddington Markets and met Joanne, she was absolutely lovely to deal with. I love supporting local businesses and I look forward to my next JJD purchase!
