The story

Lavende takes its cue from a meadow fringed with sprigs of lavender — sun-warmed, aromatic and with as much green in the air as there is flower.

It opens with bergamot and lemon, giving the fragrance a clean citrus brightness before the lavender begins to emerge. French lavender sits at the heart, aromatic and gently floral, while rosemary introduces a fresh herbal edge that keeps the fragrance from becoming overly sweet or powdery.

Lavende naturally belongs on a bedside table. The lavender has the calmness you want at the end of the day, while bergamot, lemon and rosemary keep the fragrance fresh rather than sleepy or heavily floral.

It also works beautifully in a bathroom, where the citrus and herbal notes give it a clean character. In a living room, place it somewhere quieter — beside a reading chair, on a side table or in a corner where you tend to settle at the end of the day.

Joanne's placement: On a bedside table alongside white linen, pale timber and soft greens. The clear glass doesn't compete with the room around it; once lit, the flame becomes the decorative element.

The vessel

Lavende is deliberately understated. White soy wax sits inside a clear glass vessel, finished with the JJ Design gold label.

Once lit, the flame becomes the focus, throwing warm light through the clear glass and white wax. The gold label provides just enough detail without making the candle the dominant object in the room.

When the candle is finished, wash out the remaining wax and keep the vessel. Its simplicity makes it easy to reuse as a small vase, bathroom container, holder for brushes or other everyday objects.

Is Lavende a traditional lavender fragrance?

Yes. Once the remaining wax has been removed and the glass thoroughly cleaned, the clear vessel can be repurposed around the home.

Caring for your candle

The first burn matters most. Let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the glass before you put it out — usually two to four hours. A candle remembers its first burn. Stop it early and it can begin to tunnel.

Trim the wick to 5 mm before every burn. An untrimmed wick can smoke, flicker and mark the glass. A trimmed wick helps the candle burn cleanly and evenly.

Burn for no more than four hours at a time. Longer burns can overheat the wax and affect the fragrance.

Keep it out of a draught. Moving air makes the flame lean, which can cause uneven burning and soot on the glass.

Stop when approximately 10 mm of wax remains. Continuing beyond this point can cause the base of the vessel to become excessively hot.

Then keep the vessel. Once cool, remove the remaining wax and wash the glass with warm soapy water before giving it another purpose.
