Lavende — 400g Scented Soy Candle

There is a particular kind of calm that comes from walking through lavender when the sun has warmed the leaves and the air carries as much green as it does flower. Lavende was created around that feeling — an enchanting meadow fringed with sprigs of lavender, fresh rather than powdery and grounded by woods underneath.

It opens with bergamot and lemon, giving the fragrance a clean citrus brightness before the lavender begins to emerge. At its heart is French lavender, aromatic and gently floral, with rosemary bringing a green, herbal edge that keeps the fragrance from becoming overly sweet. Amber arrives underneath to give it warmth, while cedarwood provides a dry, woody base. What remains in the room is soft and calming, but not sleepy — lavender with freshness, structure and a little earth beneath it.

Where it works

Joanne, who has spent eighteen years designing interiors, would naturally put Lavende in a bedroom. There is something particularly suited to the end of the day about lavender, but the bergamot, lemon and rosemary make this much fresher than the traditional lavender fragrances often associated with bedtime.

On a bedside table, the clear glass and white wax almost disappear into a neutral interior, leaving the flame and fragrance to do the work. It sits particularly well with white linen, pale timber, stone and soft greens — a candle that doesn't need to compete visually with the room around it.

It also works beautifully in a bathroom, where the citrus and rosemary give the lavender a cleaner character. In a living room, try it somewhere quieter — beside a reading chair, on a side table or in a corner where you tend to settle at the end of the day.

The vessel

Lavende is deliberately understated. White soy wax sits inside a clear glass vessel, finished with the JJ Design gold label. Where some candles in the collection introduce colour and pattern into a room, this one does the opposite. It is simple, quiet and easy to place.

Once lit, the clear glass allows the flame to become the focus, throwing warm light through the wax and onto the surface around it. Against white, stone or timber, the gold label provides just enough detail to give the vessel presence without making it the dominant object in the room.

The candle stands approximately 10.5 cm tall and 9.5 cm across. When the wax is finished, wash out the glass and use it again — its simplicity makes it particularly useful as a small vase, bathroom container or holder for brushes and other everyday objects.

With approximately sixty hours of burn time, Lavende is a candle to make part of an evening routine rather than save for an occasion.

Caring for your candle

• The first burn matters most. Let the wax melt all the way to the edge of the glass before you put it out — usually two to four hours. A candle remembers its first burn. Stop it early and it will tunnel, and keep tunnelling for the rest of its life.
• Trim the wick to 5 mm before every burn. An untrimmed wick smokes, flickers and marks the glass. A trimmed one burns clean.
• Burn for no more than four hours at a time. Beyond that the wax overheats and the fragrance flattens.
• Keep it out of a draught. Moving air makes the flame lean, and a leaning flame is what causes uneven burning and soot on the glass.
• Stop when about 10 mm of wax remains. Below that the vessel gets too hot to be safe.
• Then keep the vessel. Wash it out with warm soapy water and give it another purpose. The simple clear glass is designed to remain useful long after the fragrance has gone.
