“Should I choose the 2kg, 1kg, 400g or 200g candle?”
Many people assume the answer is simply based on burn time, but as an interior designer, I look at candles very differently.
A candle is one of the most effective styling pieces in a home. It adds warmth, fragrance and ambience while helping create balance and proportion within a room.
Choosing the right size isn’t about buying the biggest candle—it’s about selecting a candle that’s in proportion with both your furniture and the space around it.
After styling homes for more than 18 years, these are the principles I use.
1. Start with the Size of Your Furniture
The size of your furniture should always guide the size of your candle.
A candle should feel in proportion with the piece it sits on. A small candle can look lost on a large dining table, while an oversized candle may overwhelm a compact bedside or side table.
Large 2kg Candle
Best for:
- Large dining tables (8–12 seats)
- Oversized coffee tables
- Grand kitchen islands
- Luxury entry consoles
- Open-plan living areas with high ceilings
The 2kg candle creates a striking focal point and is best suited to larger furniture and spacious rooms where it has the scale to make an impact.
Interior Designer Tip:
Let the candle be the hero piece, then layer lower accessories such as books, bowls or decorative objects around it.
2. The 1kg Candle – My Go-To Size
If I had to choose one candle that works in the greatest number of homes, it would be the 1kg candle.
Its proportions make it incredibly versatile.
Perfect for:
- Six to eight seat dining tables
- Medium to large coffee tables
- Hallway consoles
- Buffets
- Bedroom dressers
It provides presence without overpowering the space and suits the scale of most contemporary Australian homes.
3. The 400g Candle – Everyday Styling
The 400g candle is ideal when you want to introduce fragrance and style without dominating the furniture.
Best suited to:
- Bedside tables
- Bathroom vanities
- Smaller coffee tables
- Office desks
- Kitchen benchtops
- Apartment living
It layers beautifully with books, trays, ceramics and greenery, making it the perfect finishing touch.
4. The 200g Candle – Perfect for Smaller Spaces
The 200g candle is ideal for areas where a subtle decorative accent is all that’s needed.
Perfect for:
- Bathrooms
- Shelving
- Home offices
- Small apartments
- Guest bedrooms
- Styling in groups of three
Rather than being the focal point, it complements surrounding décor while adding warmth and fragrance.
Consider Ceiling Height
Ceiling height also influences the size of decorative accessories.
Homes with high or vaulted ceilings generally suit larger styling pieces, including candles, as they help balance the scale of the room.
Conversely, homes with lower ceilings or smaller rooms often feel more balanced with medium or smaller candles.
Think About Viewing Distance
Another consideration is how far away the candle is viewed.
A candle on an entry console or large dining table is usually seen from several metres away, so a larger candle creates greater visual impact.
On a bedside table or bathroom vanity, where you’re much closer, a 400g or 200g candle often feels perfectly proportioned.
Bigger Isn’t Always Better… But Neither Is Smaller
One of the most common styling mistakes is choosing a candle that’s too small for the furniture.
If a candle looks insignificant on the table, it’s probably undersized for the space.
Choosing the correct scale helps create a more balanced and professionally styled look.

When styling a room, I always ask:
Does the candle feel in proportion with the furniture?
If the answer is yes, you’ve almost certainly chosen the right size.
